The Last Bike Night - September 3rd, 2008

We had a great night tonight. Folks had lots of fun, and there was even a little single track and a whole lot of urban exploring. We found a new route that was pretty fun. We went from Roosevelt Park to Snowy Mountain Creamery at 15th & Main via the Kensington Greenway, a short section of single track and over on 15th.

Much fun was had by all.

I have to apologize if anyone wakes up to a flat tomorrow. The offroad section along the Mountain View Cemetary had goatheads. Sorry. I had a flat tonight. Again, sory.

September 3rd will be the last bike night for 2008. This has been a great 5th season for Bike Night. Our last ride will have shwag and a BBQ at my place at 615 Lincoln Street. Should be fun and be sure to pass the word! Hot Dogs all around. Details will be firmed up and announced on the 27th.

Later,
Ryan

Lookin' Good for Wednesday!

Wednesday is looking good - highs near 88. Kelly mentioned folks took to the Greenway and Lefthand Brewery, while the other half went on to ride Martin Street. Sounds like everyone had a good time. I'm looking forward to making it to the ride this week. See you then. Bring ideas for the ride.

Thanks, Kelly for leading!

Change Up: Wednesday July 23rd - Greenway Adventure

Hey all,

By popular demand we'll be changing things up this Wednesday. Instead of cruising the tree lined streets of Old Town we'll be hitting the trail of Longmont's Scenic St. Vrain Greenway. The route will take us south out of Roosevelt past Thompson Park and across 3rd Avenue on Gay Street. Once on Gay, we'll drop to the Greenway. We will then head west along the greenway and circle Golden Ponds park. Along the way we'll see several installations of art and geese galore. Hmmmm. Wasn't that an art in public places thing a few years back?

Anyway it should be fun. This ride will be a bit longer than our previous rides and we'll ride on a couple of busy streets (Gay and Boston briefly). Gay has bike lanes so we'll try to stay within those. If you're not sure of your bike skills and/or your children's skills you may want to meet us on the greenway. Parking is available at Izaak Walton park, or along Price Road south of Boston Avenue along the railroad tracks.

On the way back from Golden Ponds we'll drop by the Lefthand Brewery - bring some cash. If beer isn't your thing you can continue on along the greenway and back to Old Town. After the Brewery we'll cruise the Greenway to Martin Street and back to Old Town.

I hope you will join us for this fun adventure. Same time, same starting place: 6:30PM Roosevelt Park.

GOOD NIGHT

Tonight was a good night. We had a great ride. Approximately 15 or so folks came out and rode. The rain held off long enough for us to get around Old Town. We took in the sights and finished up with some ice cream. Good times. See you next week, same time, same place.

5 YEARS!

Bike Night is back. Tonight was our first ride of the 2008 Season. Thanks to everyone who rode along. We picked up folks along the way, too. Always fun to have more folks. Thanks to our new first timers Darrin, Debby, and Rheese, Steve and Eddie (sweet cruisers), Christianna and her dad, Wes, Brodie and Tiffany. I'll be bringing the digital camera along on future rides so we'll post more photos later.

Check out the new 2008 Poster. Yep that's my great-uncle clay there on the cover. He's suave and quite the prankster and avid Twins Fan. He's the perfect face for Bike Night 2008.

This year we'll mix things up a bit. I'll be posting to the blog more often and riders will get to shape the ride. We've been doing the same course for the past 5 years. I won't say it's getting old but, it's pretty predictable. This year we'll try and get down to the greenway and maybe have a ride that could include the Lefthand and the brand spankin' new Dales Brewery on Pike Road. Both are accessible (relatively) on the greenway. - sorta.

Thanks to all who showed up and made this a great kick off!

Also there will be other great things happening this year - but that's my hook - so keep checking back. If you don't see anything new - post something - you can keep this blog fresh too.

Til next time. Ryan

Welcome to the Longmont Bike NIght Blogg

First let me say Welcome!

Second I'd like to let you in on a secret, this is going to be a really good way to stay up on what's going on with Bike Night!

If you're new to Bike Night or not sure what Bike Night is read on.

Bike Night is a loosely organized ride through Longmont Colorado. Bike Night has been going on now for about 3 years. Participation ebs and flows but generally is about 15 - 20 folks. Ages range from 20's to 60's. If you're old enough to ride and young enough to stay on, then you're probably just right for Bike Night.

Rides leave Roosevelt Park at 6:40 PM we meet at 6:30 PM. Fun is the name of the game. However, even fun has to follow a few rules. First, I try to go over a few rules of the road before we venture out. Second, we try to introduce ourselves, first names only, usually. Third I describe the route.

The route is generally 45 minutes long covers about 8 miles, and rarely exceeds 6 miles per hour. There is only one hill that might elevate your heart rate. That is the up from Longs Peak to the top of Sunset Hill near the water slide. The reward, besides a few extra burned calories, is a dramatic view of the front range, foothills and Sunset Golf Course. From here we zig zag back to the Eastside Neighborhood, through Roosevelt Park, around Collyer Park and through the traffic circle at Longs Peak and Collyer Street.

If you're late you can still join up. First ride west along 6th Avenue, or sit at Francis and Longs Peak Avenue. You'll see us eventually. If you're really late meet us at Abbodanza's outdoor patio. It is rarely crowded and the pizza is good too.

I'm hoping by now, that you've realized this ride isn't about qualifying for a century road ride, or a training ride for the Tour de France. No, this is a ride that lets you go at a comfortable pace and chat with a new friend, commiserate with neighbors or meet some other folks.

I hope you will join us!
